Pantheon of the Patriarchs

The Pantheon of the Patriarchs is installed in the former chapter room. It was in this room that the canons regular met daily and decided about the material and spiritual life in the Monastery. The reason behind its designation is that a chapter of the Rule of Saint Augustine was always read at the beginning of every session.

Following the Dissolution of the Religious Orders in Portugal (1834), the room had several functions, including serving as the archive of the Ministry of Justice. The Patriarchal Pantheon has been located here since 1955.

The Patriarchate of Lisbon was created in 1716 by Pope Clement XI, after a diplomatic success and personal request made by King D. João V. The Cardinals-Patriarchs of Lisbon are entombed here, with the exception of the first five.
