GENERAL TOUR

Discovering the Monastery

The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora is an icon in Lisbon’s landscape. It is part of the city’s history and is a symbol of the royal power of different reigning dynasties in Portugal. Founded by D. Afonso Henriques, rebuilt by D. Filipe I and reappropriated by successive kings of the Bragança dynasty, this monument holds a unique heritage in the country. The largest collection of Baroque tiles in situ, a medieval cistern, a sacristy whose walls are covered with inlaid marbles, the Royal Pantheon of Bragança and a magnificent panoramic view over the city. These are some of the gems that you can find inside and that will be explored in the general guided tour. Getting to know the Monastery is a pleasant way to learn more about the history of Lisbon and Portugal.
